Times, they are a-changing. Out with the old, in with the new. Those are a couple of well worn clichés that are clichés for a reason. Things are constantly changing. The way we travel, the way we communicate, the way we photograph, and also the way we present our portfolios to potential clients. Judges are interesting specimens. Especially those who judge photography. One judge may be moved to tears by a shot of a mountain reflected in the still waters of a crystal clear lake, another may just shrug and say, “Eh.” So what are they looking for at these photo competitions? Is there a set criteria? Is there a simple formula that, if followed, will ensure the top spot? (Hint: Probably not.) But there are certain things a competitive photographer can keep in mind when submitting work to a competition. Photographers often find themselves at the mercy of forces in which they have no control. Outdoors, they might have to deal with bad weather, uncooperative sunlight, and disgruntled models. Indoors, they might have to deal with malfunctioning studio equipment, a mismanaged location, and disgruntled models. But there is something a photographer can use to make certain aspects of their shoot a success. The flash. If used properly either off or on the camera, the flash can be the difference between high quality photos and, well…disgruntled models. (more…)

If a photographer takes a bunch of pictures in the woods, but no one sees them, is he still a photographer? Kind people say, yes. Most people say, no. Publishing a photo, to most, is vindication that a photographer is worth his salt. To the photographer, a published picture, is validation their work, their art, is appreciated by his or her peers. It is the one true achievement that to most budding photographers seems unreachable, unattainable, even more so than selling their images to the public. But is it, really? (more…)
